There are three mined soapstone deposits along the Eastern Americas. One is south of Quebec in Canada, another is in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil… and there’s a vein here in Albemarle County, Virginia, near a small town called Schuyler.
Soapstone and glass have history. 180 years ago fabricators of glass telegraph knobs used soapstone powder as a heat-resistant lubricant in their molds. Today we mix soapstone powders in our glass recipes to create custom colors, and include solid rocks in our pieces – resulting in our signature “Fragile Rocks” collection – hand-blown glass and soapstone fusion for use and display in your home or office.
